Propane Pricing Guide
We believe in transparent, honest pricing. While propane rates fluctuate with the market, our commitment to fair local pricing never changes.
Propane Price Averages
Understanding the market helps you know whether you're getting a fair price. These are historical averages from EIA (U.S. Energy Information Administration) data — not a quote from Brothers Propane. Actual prices change weekly and vary by supplier, volume, and season.
Source: U.S. EIA Weekly Residential Propane Prices — 2025/26 heating season averages.
The national average for residential propane as of late winter 2025/26. Northeast states and rural markets typically run higher than this figure.
Colorado consistently ranks among the lowest-cost states for propane in the Western region — a combination of proximity to refineries and strong local competition.
Rural delivery to Elbert County typically carries a modest premium over the statewide average due to longer routes, lower delivery density, and smaller tank volumes. The range reflects seasonal and volume variation.
Why Rural Propane Costs More Than State Averages
The Colorado state average reflects a mix of high-density Front Range deliveries (where a truck fills 10 tanks on one road) and rural routes (where a truck may drive 20 miles for one stop). Rural customers like those in Elbert County, Kiowa, and Elizabeth almost always pay above the state average because:
- Longer delivery routes mean higher per-stop operating costs
- Lower delivery density reduces economies of scale
- Many rural customers have smaller tanks (120–250 gal), requiring more frequent deliveries
- Seasonal demand spikes hit rural areas harder — less supply buffer near the area
Brothers Propane is based in Elizabeth, near Kiowa. Ask for a quote for your delivery address rather than assuming that a provider's location guarantees lower prices.
When Prices Are Lowest
- Summer (June–August) — Demand drops, prices typically fall 10–20% below winter peaks. The best time to pre-buy or fill a large tank.
- Large volume deliveries — Filling a 500-gallon tank vs. a 120-gallon tank usually earns a lower per-gallon rate.
- Auto-delivery accounts — Regular customers on automatic programs typically get priority scheduling and consistent pricing.
When Prices Are Highest
- Winter (Dec–Feb) — Peak heating demand drives up wholesale propane prices, and those increases are passed through at retail.
- After a cold snap — Emergency run-outs require priority dispatch, which commands a premium from any supplier.
- Small will-call orders — Calling for 30 gallons when your 120-gallon tank runs dry is the most expensive way to buy propane.

What Affects Your Propane Price?
Seasonality
Prices are typically highest in winter when demand peaks. Buying in summer (Pre-Buy) can lock in lower rates.
Volume Delivered
Larger deliveries often qualify for volume discounts. A 500-gallon tank usually gets a better rate per gallon than a 120-gallon tank.
Crude Oil Markets
Propane is a byproduct of crude oil refining. Global energy markets directly impact local propane costs.
Hidden Competitor Fees
National brands often add Hazmat, Delivery, and Admin fees. We don't. The price per gallon is what you pay.
